Fiona Wright

In my work I explore some of the most hostile and desolate landscapes found in Britain. More often than not, I am drawn to the far North West of Scotland. Here can be found a beautiful and barren landscape that mercifully, has not fallen hostage to the crude and often selfish infestation of man. These wild and lonely places that I seek to photograph, are engulfed in awe inspiring mountain ranges, desolate moorland, jagged rock formations and a dark and brooding coastline. The eerie silence frequently experienced in such places, invites one to dream, to reflect and perhaps most importantly for me, to enquire and to explore my inner self. These feelings and emotions are then once again re-ignited in the darkroom, when the many quiet hours spent creating these images, allows me the uninhibited freedom to self indulge in these unassuming beauty spots.

I studied a BA in Fine Art at UWA School of Art, specialising in photography and printmaking. Upon gaining my BA in 2003, I continued my studies further, completing an MA in 2005, this time, working solely through the medium of photography. Since then, I have been engaged both in teaching photography and continuing to produce more images of Scotland, but also more recently I have explored some of the landscapes found in Southern Ireland.
